What is parent coaching?Parenting kids with ADHD or other executive functioning challenges can be hard sometimes (or a lot of the time), and general parenting strategies don’t always get to the root of EF issues. Parent coaching from a trained executive functioning specialist will help you understand the root cause of your kids' struggles and how to address them with strategies you can use immediately.
Parent coaching is also a great option for parents whose kids are too young or immature to benefit from individual coaching. What age range does this program apply to?The strategies we teach apply to kids from elementary through high school, but the age-appropriate expectations we talk about in coaching vary by age. We split coaching groups up by the age of the child. We do two age groups: elementary through 7th grade, and 8th grade through high school.
How will coaching help me as a parent? Our kids didn't come with manuals, and this stuff is not as intuitive as we may have been led to believe. To make it even harder, what worked for our first kid doesn't always work for our second kid. Some kids seem born with a fully intact executive functioning system, and others struggle. Parent coaching is designed to give you strategies for in-the-moment guidance as you encounter opportunities for executive function teaching during your time with your kids. It helps to have planned out responses to common situations.
How will coaching me help my student? As parents, we are our child's primary teachers. Because the home environment is typically less structured than school, we have more opportunities (or different opportunities) to see our child's level of executive functioning. We have a good idea of our child's level of independence. Does our child wake up in the morning and follow a routine on their own? Do they do homework without prompting? Can they get off their video games independently when it's time to go to bed? Coaching you helps you know how to help your kid develop independence in age-appropriate ways.
What's the benefit of group coaching?Group coaching is an opportunity to access coaching more affordably than 1:1 coaching, and it's a great way to connect with other parents. It helps to hear that what happens at your house is not so unusual. It helps to exchange ideas. We will work on implementing strategies, and we will troubleshoot them together.
How will the sessions be structured? We will have 5 group meetings over 10 weeks. You will be assigned an online module to watch prior to each session. During the session, we will review the module, discuss specific ways each family can implement the strategy taught in the module, and make a specific plan for how to do that before the next session. We will also review the previous week's strategy, assess how it worked and what adjustments need to be made to make it more effective.
We will also do two individual check-ins: One mid-way through the program, and another at the end. |
